Using Photos Effectively {Tech Tuesday}

Everyone wants to see pictures.  They make blogs come to life.  They give a little glimpse into a reader’s life.  They show emotion.  They promote traffic to your blog.

So, how do you as a blogger effectively use photos on your blog?  It takes more than just simply uploading a picture onto your blog.

You need to be sure you are using the correct SIZE picture.  A tiny picture can be hard for readers to see, and too large of a picture can overtake your post and leave your reader overwhelmed.

There are lots of photo editing services out there. Adobe Photoshop Elements and Picmonkey are just a couple.  Whatever you decide to use, make sure you use the correct size picture.  And please always use the “preview” button on the platform you are using (whether that be Blogger or WordPress) to make sure the image looks nice and centered and sized for your post.  A good rule of thumb is to re-size anything that is over 600 x 400 px.

Another good thing to keep in mind is the source of your pictures.  Unfortunately, using a Google image search isn’t always the best idea. Most of the images you will find are copyrighted and aren’t fair to use for various blogs. This is an excellent opportunity for you to use your own images.  Get in there and tweak them and work on your own photography skills!

Placement of photos is another good tool to keep in mind.  People are drawn to pictures, so be sure you attach your image in the beginning of your post.  You may also add pictures toward the end; however, using only an image at the end will not draw as much traffic.

What other tips can you think of that will inspire and help with readers? We would love to hear.  Please e-mail us today.
