Tech Tuesday: Fitness Apps

November 4, 2014

To keep with our theme of Fitness in the Fall, we’re going to share some Fitness Apps that are FREE!

Nike Training Club – You start by selecting the latest workout, getting a new workout, or doing a quick start route.  If you “Get a Workout” then you’re able to personalize it based on your goals.  You select your goal (get lean, get tones, get strong, get focused) then you select your level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) and then you select your workout.  They provide times next to each workout so you can choose something that works with your time frame.  Lastly, you select the music, review the workout, and then download it if you choose to do that particular one.  What’s cool about the Nike Training Club App is that you’re not downloading every workout they provide, so it’s not using all of that space on your phone – instead you pick and choose from their library which workouts you want to use.

Run Keeper – With Run Keeper, you can track your workout based on time, distance, and calories burned.  You can choose from a variety of activities such as running, cycling, swimming, walking, and more.   Run Keeper also has the ability to track your goals and they can provide training plans to help you reach your goals.  This is a great way to keep up with your progress.  Another thing I really enjoy is it tells me when I’ve improved, if I reach my fastest mile for a certain distance, it notices that and congratulates me!

My Fitness Pal – Maybe you don’t want to just keep up with your workouts, but you also want a place to track your diet.  My Fitness Pal is the app for you!  One thing I would suggest is to come up with a healthy calorie count with a doctor or physician.  Most people underestimate how many calories they need and this app focuses on calories taken in and calories burned.  Once you determine a safe calorie count, then you can start tracking what you eat and it deducts those calories for you.  You can also input the activity you do for the day to help adjust calories needed.

7 Minutes – Out of town?  Staying at a hotel?  Too busy for a workout?  The 7 minute App is for YOU!  This app will provide you with a quick 7 minute workout and doing something is better than doing nothing, even if it’s not much!  The app tells you what equipment you’ll need (all simple things you can quickly grab on hand) and then you let it know when you’re ready.  It provides a detailed dialogue of the exercise you should be doing and counts down for you until the next one.  Follow the instructions and you’ll end up with a hearty 7 minute workout.

What are your favorite fitness apps?
