A few weeks ago, I went thrift store shopping with my BFF’s. We busted up in Dirt Cheap with money to spend.

At one point, this was our buggy:

We love the Dirt Cheap. For some reason, the stars always line up and I leave with a LOT! On this shopping trip with my friends, I was feeling very confident in my sewing abilities and I bought a skirt that was a little too big for me. The bad thing about Thrift Store shopping is there is normally just one size. And you have to make it work if you really like the skirt/top/dress, etc.

I bought a skirt for $3.20, and I FINALLY altered it:

I was doing great until I forgot the skirt has pockets…….then I had to rip the seam out and start over again.

Twice.

So to get this project started, I turned the dress inside out, tried it on, and starting pinning down the side. Because it’s an elastic waste band (can we pause and praise the Lord for elastic waste bands?)…….you can be liberal in your pinning.

Next, take the skirt off- and cut.

This was the scary part to me. Then I reminded myself it was $3.20. If screw this up, I’ve wasted $3.

Now, because I’m a rogue seamstress that doesn’t have time to think things through, I cut out the pocket. I didn’t think for a minute that I would salvage it. Plus, isn’t it chic to just put 1 hand in your pocket instead of your hands in both pockets??

After I cut the skirt, I simply sewed a curved line down the side.

A curved line you say?? Is there such a thing??

Well in my sewing, there is. A curved line is where you start off straight but curve your material so you are not making a poufy skirt a straight line. It’s very technical.

I’m pretty pleased with my $3.20 find. Don’t be afraid to alter. I figure, if I mess it up, it’s like wasting a cup of Starbucks. I would rather alter on clothes from Dirt Cheap then Ann Taylor. I actually have I dress that I need to let the hem out and I just can’t bring myself to do it. At this point, I would rather it be too short than mess the entire dress up.
