I must say, I feel pretty honored to get to share a little recipe with my fellow Mississippi gals today! I’m a pure bred Mississippi lady, and I have a feeling I’ll always call it home. There’s something so warm to me about my Mississippi roots. I learned how to catch fish in our family’s pond, I had my first taste of crawfish when I was a babe, and I grew up eating my Meme’s chocolate gravy.
I know, it doesn’t even sound like a real thing! To me, this is a southern classic. I mean, what’s better than pouring chocolate over a biscuit and calling it breakfast?
Not much, y’all, not much.
This recipe is easy peasy and I bet you have all the ingredients in your pantry!
¼ cup of cocoa
¾ cup of sugar
¼ cup of self-rising flour
1 stick of butter
3 cups of milk
1 teaspoon of vanilla
First, melt your butter in a large saucepan; then add the cocoa. Wisk lightly before adding sugar and self-rising flour, and slowly add the milk.
I usually add 1 cup at a time and stir in between each cup to make sure that it is all being incorporated well. After adding the milk, bring the pot to a boil and let it boil until you start to see it thicken.
While you’re waiting on your gravy to boil, start on your homemade biscuit dough.
Whip out a can of Pillsbury and you’re good to go. Sure, homemade biscuits melt in your mouth. But, I’m a 22 year old newlywed who is trying to figure out this whole wife thing one load of laundry at a time. Ain’t no body got time for homemade biscuits!
Pop your biscuits in the oven and turn your gravy on low and let it simmer. It will start to thicken up in a couple of minutes and you’ll be ready to pour it over your hot, not-homemade biscuits!
Then, invite a friend over who doesn’t like chocolate gravy and make her taste it. She just may decide she likes it. (True story: I made a fellow North Mississippi blogger, Kate, a believer in chocolate gravy.)
Nicole is a born and bred North Mississippi gal who recently said “I do” and is beginning to learn what it means to be a wife. She’s an Ole Miss grad (Hotty Toddy!) and will one day soon have a class of sweet, elementary age babes. Nicole writes about being a newlywed, her love for Jesus, and her obsession with being a fur-mom. Hop on over to Bloom and see what Nicole’s currently chatting about!
