Honoring Veterans…all year long {Veteran’s Day}

November 11, 2014

VETERANS DAYFirst and foremost, we at MSWB extend our gratitude, on this and every day, to our veterans.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the organizer, Who gave us the freedom to demonstrate

It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag.

And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag.”

– Father Dennis Edward O’Brien, USMC

Second, we would emphasize that our Veterans need and deserve our support all year long, not just on commemorative holidays. Ceremonies are a wonderful way to celebrate, honor, and remember.

But what about the day after the ceremony?

Here’s a few ideas:

1. Talk to a veteran. Pick up the phone, stop by for a visit, meet for coffee. Every veteran has a unique story, and all of these stories make up the fabric of our history, which is being made every day.

2. Support their families.

3. Get involved in a charity for veterans. There are lots out there. (Do check with your Secretary of State’s Office to make sure of a nonprofit’s legitimacy.)

4. Just say thank you.

Support and community don’t have to be difficult or expensive. Just thoughtful.
