Fresh Start as a Blogger {Start!}

January 16, 2014

The end of the year always seems to be a stressful time. People are anxiously preparing for the holidays, or traveling to see family members, and when all the hustle and bustle of the season is over, we sometimes find ourselves feeling overwhelmed and burned out. If you’re like me, when things become stressful, blogging takes a backseat, and creating content on top of dealing with holiday chaos is just not in the cards. Thankfully, once the holiday season is over, we have a chance to make a fresh start with the dawning of the new year.

Today I’d like to share some tips on how to make a fresh start with your blog in the new year.

1. Reflect- There is something about the new year that often makes us very reflective. Use this time to not only reflect on yourself, but your blog as well. You may be surprised at how your blog has changed over the course of the year.

Ask yourself these simple questions:

-What topics worked for me?
-What didn’t?
-What posts did I enjoy writing the most?

Once you take the time to reflect, you will have a better understanding of your blog and how you can make it better in the new year.

2. Re-evaluate- Think about why you started blogging. Was it to make friends? Did you want to document a particular moment in your life? Is it a hobby or a creative outlet? Whatever your reasons, take a step back and re-evaluate your blog. Did you stay true to your intentions?

There are so many creative and inspiring blogs out there and sometimes we get so caught up in trying to mimic content from popular blogs, that we lose ourselves. Sometimes we even forget why we started blogging in the first place. Don’t try to be like someone else. Be true to yourself and the things you love and the content will flow.

3. Redirect- Think about the direction your blog is headed. Where is your content taking you? Are you pleased with the destination?

After you’ve had time to reflect and re-evaluate, you’ll have a better understanding of where you’d like your blog to go in the new year. If your content is steering you towards your destination, great! If not, maybe it’s time to change course.

Think about what you want your blog to be. A cooking blog? A lifestyle blog? A fashion blog? If you want to write about fashion, but all of your posts are about food, maybe fashion really isn’t your passion. Maybe it’s time to redirect your blog to focus on what really interests you. If you want to write about cooking, then write about cooking. But if cooking is not your only interest, don’t limit yourself.

The beauty of having a personal blog is that it is yours. You can write about whatever you want, and change it as many times as you want. Odds are your blog has already changed many times since your early blogging days, and that’s perfectly fine. We change from year to year and it’s only natural that our blogs change with us.

Have a Happy New Year and good luck with blogging in 2014!
