ADORE your city Q & A

February 7, 2015

What gives a city that one of a kind “feels like home” vibe?  I came to Mississippi without knowing a single person, and seven years later, I still get to call it home.  There are so many unique things about a town that can make it feel like home.  Whether you have lived in the same town for 25 years or you are visiting a city for the first time, the “feels like home” perception can be so tangible…

Every town has its quirks, every town has its own traditions and people.  What about YOUR town gives you the “feels like home” sentiment?

Where is your favorite place to be in your city?
My favorite place to be outside and enjoy sunshine, to get some quiet time, or to simply talk with a friend is the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge.  I like to hammock and run at the refuge. Sometimes Mark and I will take our bikes to ride.  There are a few trails to explore and it is always fun to see an alligator or two.

What is the best restaurant in your city?
This is such a difficult question.  The best restaurant? Ever? Without hesitation I will write chick-fil-a, but that’s a given.
Let’s think local.  Best restaurant? Stromboli’s

What is the best coffee shop in your city?

Now, before you jump to conclusions and call me on not truly supporting local businesses, I will explain.  My favorite coffee shop in town is Starbucks.  My husband and I met in Starbucks, so cut me some slack.  It’s a comical story for another time.  I love the rewards that Starbucks offers its consumers.  I truly love their coffee, black and bold.

However, I love the atmosphere that nine twenty-nine provides.  This is a true homey environment.  Mark and I had our wedding reception at nine twenty-nine coffee bar on Main Street.  Nine twenty-nine has deep, secluded booths and yet open, friendly tables.  It caters to every type of person.

What is the best “first date” location in your city? Our first date was at an authentic Chinese restaurant that no longer exists.  However, if I would get to re-plan a first date, I would say one of the greatest places to have a first or second date would be to eat at Old Venice Pizza Co, swing over to Bop’s for dessert, and then walk around Mississippi State University’s junction and drill field.  You don’t have to be in college to enjoy the beautiful campus of MSU.  These are all public places and cater to a night of conversation, which is essential when you are getting to know someone.

What is the best place to eat breakfast in your city? My absolute favorite place to eat breakfast or brunch is city bagel.  I so much enjoy their homemade bagels and never-ending combinations of bagel sandwiches.  My mouth is watering just thinking about it.  In college, my teammates and I would head to city bagel every Saturday after our long runs.

What is your favorite thing about your city? Though there are so many incredible things about Starkville that could fill enough books to pack a library, I must say that my absolute favorite thing about this town is the people that walk the streets every day.  The people of this town give Starkville the “feels like home” warmth.  I get a sincere “how yam doing” while choosing what type of bread to buy.  So many times there have been people that step up to “pay it forward” with meals.  There have been countless times I overhear a positive conversation at a coffee shop or see kids playing with dogs.  I work with some of the most enjoyable people who truly want to help me in every way.  My neighbors check in on us multiple times a day and keep an eye on our house when we are gone.  When the sun shines on Starkville, the sky is beautiful and more people than I can count are outside enjoying each other and the weather.   Even when it rains and pours, people huddle together inside and bond over crummy weather and a good conversation.  What I adore about this town, is that everyone is family regardless of where you originate from.  Starkville is a magnet for diversity and a spring of happiness and a home for anyone willing to give it a chance.

where do you live? – Brandon, MS / Flowood, MS / Jackson, MS (it all sorta runs together for me! haha)

where is your favorite place to be in your city? At our Flowood walking trail, it’s such a lovely place to jog and experience nature.

what is the best restaurant in your city? I honestly don’t eat out much here – if I answered this question, my answer would be lame like the Chinese Restaurant that I love to frequent when I want takeout at home or Whole Foods because they offer the type of food I enjoy most.

what is the best coffee shop in your city? I would say Cups! But my favorite cups locations are the ones in Brandon, Fondren, & Madison!

what is the best “first date” location in your city? I would say eating out at Dogwood or the Renaissance and then spending time walking around to talk and get to know each other then end up at a coffee shop, Fondren Public for a drink, or grab some frozen yogurt.

what is the best place to eat breakfast in your city? Corner Bakery or Joe’s Diner.

what is your favorite thing about your city? I love how it’s constantly growing and evolving! I also see a lot of healthier options making their way here and that’s so exciting! I love having a Whole Foods available and walking trails continue to pop up.

Heather!

I have been to Cups a few times! I absolutely love the fun atmosphere there. It’s so quaint. I have also been to the Renissance, and totally agree with you! That would be such a fun place to walk/talk with each other for a date night! <3 I hope I can visit your area soon. When I do, I'll be sure to let you know.

Renee
